Rotten Tomatoes is reportedly said to be considering further changes to its audience reviews process following continued negative posts by trolls.
As reported by THR, Rotten Tomatoes may soon require users to verify that they have actually “seen the film in question before being allowed to post a critique.”
It is unclear how this will work, but it’s another potential play to quell these baseless negative reviews that have specifically affected Captain Marvel since its release.

Rotten Tomatoes announced its initial change to the rating system last month and removed the option for fans to comment and “rate” films prior to its actual release as a way to avoid negative reviews being posted by users before they have actually seen the movies in question.
However, it didn’t stop the roughly 58,000 audience reviews for Captain Marvel, which debuted in theaters on March 8, to bring the Audience Score down to 33%, while the critical Tomatometer was certified “fresh” at 79%.
Rotten Tomatoes blamed a “bug” for the amount of reviews within hours of Captain Marvel’s release, as 58,000 audience reviews is “more than the total of audience score reviews for Avengers: Infinity War for its entire theatrical run.”

Thankfully, those reviews didn’t amount to much as Captain Marvel earned an estimated $153 million domestically and an additional $302 million internationally during its opening weekend.
“The trolls have become ineffective now that everyone instantly recognizes that for what it is — people just hating to hate,” says IMAX Entertainment president Megan Colligan.
