Impact Files “Broken” Trademarks, Going After Reby Personally
The saga continues. Reby Hardy, wife of Matt Hardy, recently wrote on Twitter that Impact Wrestling is still after the rights to the “Broken Universe.” She also claims that the company is going after her directly to try and secure the sought-after gimmick. Reby has also denied that WWE has been talking with Anthem to purchase the rights to the “Broken” characters, even going as far as to accuse Jeff Jarrett of leaking that story to reporters. Hardy is claiming that Matt is the absolute sole creator of his popular character. On Twitter she stated: “TNA: Cut everyone’s pay & lay off a bunch of people. ALSO TNA: Let’s spend $ to go after a woman who’s 8mo. pregnant & no longer works here.”
PWInsider also discovered that Impact has recently filed trademarks for a number of different terms that relate to the “Broken Universe.” Broken Matt, Brother Nero, Vanguard1, and Broken Brilliance are all terms that were filed by Impact Wrestling back on April 28th. It should be noted that Matt Hardy filed a trademark of his own for “Broken Matt Hardy” back on March 1st of this year. It is certainly possible that this could end up going to court. Both sides are adamant that they each own the “Broken” characters, and are refusing let the other side receive complete ownership. Matt Hardy has reverted back to his normal self since returning to WWE as a result.
This has become a very heated battle between the Hardys and Anthem. It should be also be stated that WWE is still reported to be interested in using the characters for themselves. Matt Hardy has been teasing the return of the character more and more on social media and has been using some of the mannerisms more on television. He also recently promised that the character would fully return after his family’s predicament with Impact had been “deleted.” If the situation does escalate to court, it would be interesting to see if WWE involves themselves in any way. For now though, it seems that “Broken” Matt Hardy has still got a long way to go before returning.
