AEW talent set for Southside event after NXT UK wrestlers pulled
After WWE pulled NXT UK talent from the event, a few AEW wrestlers have been confirmed for Southside Wrestling’s goodbye show.
It was announced today that AEW’s Cody & Brandi Rhodes, Shawn Spears, and MJF will appear at Southside’s 9th Anniversary Show. It’s taking place at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage, England on Saturday, October 26 and is the final Southside event before Revolution Pro Wrestling takes over its operations.
Southside issued a statement on Wednesday revealing that all announced and unannounced WWE talent had been pulled from the event:
It is with much sadness to announce that WWE have pulled all announced and unannounced talent from our final show.
We asked permission in advance and accepted all conditions. We have spent a small fortune on posters/flyers/banners for the show which are now unusable.
El Ligero and Joseph Conners are possibly the two biggest stars in our 9 year history and Kay Lee Ray built the womens division on her back. With out any of the 3 of them Southside would never have [gotten] so big with all 3 regularly giving world class matches to the fans.
It also means Brady Phillips misses out on a [personal] dream match with Dragunov and that former tag champion Xia Brookside and Southside regular Saxon Huxley will also not be able to compete.
Although this is business we have personally taken this badly. 9as was our goodbye and we wanted to say it with the stars who made us what we are, our previous champions and most importantly our close friends.
Cody and The Young Bucks then posted tweets teasing that AEW would be helping out Southside.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer wrote about the NXT UK talent being pulled from the Southside goodbye show: “The story we heard is WWE pulled them because of Andy Quildan taking over for [Southside] after this show, and Andy Quildan, the owner of RevPro, has a relationship with New Japan.”
