Arlington's Biggest Political Insider Is 11 Years Old

ARLINGTON, MA — At a January campaign stop in Salem, New Hampshire, presidential candidate Joe Biden stood in front of a crowd of 250 voters, tackling issues ranging from universal health care to climate change and painting himself as the only candidate who can beat President Donald Trump. After the event at Fisk Elementary School, the former vice president spoke to just one reporter: 11-year-old Claire Handler.

Claire, a fifth-grader at Dallin Elementary School in Arlington, was covering the event for the Scholastic Kids Press, a group of 50 children who report on current events, breaking news, entertainment, sports and more in their hometowns and on the national stage. Their stories appear on the Scholastic Kids Press website and in selected issues of the Scholastic Classroom Magazines, which reach more than 25 million students nationwide.

Biden isn’t the only big name Claire has interviewed. She’s sat down with Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, author Megan McDonald and illustrator Peter Reynolds of the bestselling “Judy Moody” book series, and popular Arlington Animal Control Officer Diane Welch.

“Most of the candidates that I interviewed all feel very strongly about environmental issues,” Claire told Patch. “They want to stop climate change.”

In February, Claire trekked to New Hampshire to cover the Granite State’s first-in-the-nation primary. Super Tuesday will be a shorter hike, as Claire is heading out to the polls in Arlington to speak with residents as they cast their votes.

“The whole experience was super cool and exciting,” Claire said about the New Hampshire primary. “[It was] a little bit overwhelming at times because I went to an arena to interview some of the candidates for the Democratic primary and election.”

Claire has been writing since she was a younger girl. Her first passion was fiction, an avenue for her to use her imagination to make up stories. She got involved with the Scholastic Kids Press through a friend of her father, who had a son in the program.

The experience has been “very positive, a unique opportunity,” Claire told Patch.

Covering the election isn’t Claire’s first foray into politics — she’s also class president at the Dallin School. She found common ground with now-former Democratic candidate Amy Klobuchar, who said in a speech that she had never lost an election since the fourth grade.

“Claire shouted, ‘Me too!” her father, Eric, told Patch. Eric, who works as a producer in educational television, said writing is “much more of a Claire thing than an Eric thing.”

“It’s been fun and exciting before any interview happens,” Handler said. “I like to be on the sidelines cheering for her, seeing what’s going to happen next.”
