Auggies score 4 titles, team victory at Citrus Open
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Scoring four individual champions and 19 placewinners, Augsburg College won the team championship at the Citrus Open wrestling tournament, held Tuesday and Wednesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The tournament featured five teams ranked in the top 30 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings — No. 3 Augsburg won with 169.0 pounds, No. 15 Williams (Mass.) placed second with 148.5 points, No. 8 Cornell (Iowa) was third with 141.0 points, No. 29 John Carroll (Ohio) was fourth with 112.0 points, and No. 25 New York University was fifth with 104.0 points.
Four Auggies earned weight-class titles: top-ranked heavyweight Donny Longendyke (JR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), No. 3-ranked 165-pounder Eric Hensel (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS), No. 8-ranked 133-pounder Sam Bennyhoff (FY, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) and 197-pounder Logan Hortop (JR, Faribault, Minn.).
Longendyke claimed pins in all three of his matches, including a 58-second pin in his opening match and a 1:45 pin in the finals over Eric Tucker of Cornell, to claim the heavyweight title. Now 13-2 on the season and 97-25 in his college career, Longendyke has 10 pins on the year and 55 in his college career.
Hensel claimed four victories, with two by first-period pin, to score the title at 165, improving to 11-1 on the season with nine pins. He is now 49-27 with 25 pins in his collegiate career. Hensel recorded an 8-4 win over Dylan Knisley of Millikin (Ill.) in the finals.
Bennyhoff continued his impressive initial season as an Auggie, improving to 10-0 on the season with his title at 133, opening with a 15-3, major-decision win, following it up with a third-period pin in the semifinals and capping the meet with a 7-3 win over Pat Sockler of Muhlenberg (Pa.) in the finals.
Hortop opened his competition at 197 with three pins, then finished with a 5-3 win over Myron Hamilton of Millikin in the finals to claim the crown, improving to 10-6 on the season in the process.
Niko Anderson (FY, Lanesboro, Minn.) claimed his best individual finish of the season, going 3-1 to place second at 184, with his lone loss coming to No. 2-ranked Christopher Chorzepa of Williams in the finals. Anderson is now 10-5 on the year.
Marcus Hamer (JR, Kimball, Minn.) and Austin Boniface (JR, Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) each placed third for the Auggies, with Hamer going 4-1 at 149 and Boniface going 5-1 at 174.
Jackson Graham (SO, Apple Valley, Minn.) placed fourth at 174, while Sebastian Larson (SO, River Falls, Wis.) finished fifth at 184.
Five Auggies placed sixth at the tournament: James Goman (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Trinity-River Ridge HS) at 125, Aaron Wilson (FY, Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) at 141, Bryce Zdanovec (SO, Little Chute, Wis.) at 149, Brady McFarland (FY, Windlake, Wis./Muskego HS) at 165 and Mitch Nelson (FY, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) at 197.
Grant Parker (JR, Onalaska, Wis.) placed eighth at 157, Alex Wilson (FY, Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) placed ninth at 149, Tone Fuenffinger (SO, Hibbing, Minn.) placed ninth at 157, Ronny Ponick (FY, Stanley, Wis./Stanley-Boyd HS) placed ninth at 174, and Gavin Baade (FY, Brodhead, Wis.) placed 10th at 184.
