Michel Barnier, the European commissioner for the internal market, has formally put himself forward as a candidate to become the European People’s Party (EPP) nominee to become president of the European Commission.

In a letter sent to EPP MEP Jean-Pierre Audy today, Barnier says he would like to be considered. The group of centre-right national parties will select their candidate at a convention in Dublin on 7 March.
