CHICAGO — A blog post published Wednesday by Melisa Reidy, the ex-wife of Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell, accuses a former spouse of domestic abuse and infidelity. Russell is not named in the blog, which was linked to Reidy’s Instagram account, but the All-Star infielder was placed on “administrative leave” by Major League Baseball on Friday.

“The first time I was physically mistreated by my spouse, I was in shock,” Reidy wrote. “I couldn’t wrap my head around what just happened … Why did he get so angry? What did I do for him to want to put his hands on me?”

This isn’t the first time Russell has faced domestic abuse allegations. A June 2017 Instagram post by Reidy — since deleted — accused Russell of cheating with other women, and comments from an individual identified as a close friend attached to the update claimed the ballplayer “mentally and physically abused” his wife in front of their children. “Outside looking in, others may and probably will have a lot of negative things to say for sharing my story but after what I’ve experienced, I’m not easily intimidated anymore,” Reidy wrote in her blog post. “I’m giving myself a voice. No matter who you are or what you’re going through, you should not be afraid or ashamed to speak out about any type of abuse regardless who it will offend. You should be able to stand up for yourself & you should NEVER allow anyone to make you feel like you are wrong for doing so. It is not okay for anyone, whoever they may be or whatever title they may have in society to hurt anyone, in any shape or form. I hope my story empowers and inspires other women to stand up for themselves who are going through any type of domestic abuse.”

Russell denied the allegations and called them “false and hurtful” in 2017. Reidy filed for divorce from the shortstop in late June of that year.

Despite the denials, MLB officials opened a domestic violence investigation against Russell. Reidy, however, refused to speak to the league about the allegations, but officials said Friday that the investigation had remained opened.

“We are hopeful that this new information will allow us to complete the investigation as promptly as possible,” the league said in a statement.
