SATURDAY NEWS UPDATE
WWE
Last night’s SmackDown averaged 1.792 million viewers in the fast-national ratings, up from the 1.755 million viewers that last week’s episode averaged in the fast nationals. The rating in the 18-49 demo was a 0.5, which is up from the 0.4 rating the show drew in the fast nationals the previous week. Final numbers for last week’s SmackDown saw the show average 1.928 million viewers and draw a 0.5 rating in 18-49.
Keith Lee tweeted yesterday: “I wanted to do something educational, but also inspiring to tell you guys about everything since late January. Seems that is off the table for now. So….with that, I will find another way to tell guys about everything. It might simply a video of me chatting with you. We’ll see.”
In an interview with Forbes, The Miz spoke about his zombie lumberjack match against Damian Priest from WrestleMania Backlash: “I had a blast with it. I always enjoy whenever there’s something different and something out of the box, and whenever there’s something like that, I wanna be a part of it because you never know what’s going to happen. You never know if it’s gonna be a success or if it’s gonna be a failure. People were different, people were 50/50 ‘oh we can’t stand this match,’ or ‘oh my God this is a great match, it’s kind of funny, it’s kind of interesting,’ so I just look at it like ‘I’m gonna do the best I possibly can and give the match that hopefully everyone wants and deserves.”
On Instagram, Nikki Bella wrote that she was shocked by some of WWE’s recent releases. She thanked Ruby Riott, Mickie James, Peyton Royce, Billie Kay, Lana, and Chelsea Green for everything they’ve given to the pro wrestling industry.
Sonya Deville wrote an article for Women’s Health sharing her story of coming out.
WWE’s Kayla Braxton and Matt Camp interviewed Logan Paul ahead of his exhibition boxing match against Floyd Mayweather that’s taking place tomorrow.
WWE’s YouTube channel uploaded The Outsiders vs. Ric Flair & Roddy Piper for the WCW Tag Team titles from Great American Bash 1997, John Cena vs. The Great Khali vs. Umaga for the WWE Championship from the June 4, 2007 episode of Raw, and Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt from the June 5, 2017 episode of Raw.
Other Wrestling
Following a scary looking suicide dive spot on last night’s Dynamite, Red Velvet tweeted that she’s good and thanked everyone who checked up on her: “Thank you to my AEW Family and everyone who reached out to check up on me. I’m good and still Stirring Sh*t Up as usual.”
Eddie Edwards vs. Joe Doering has been added to the lineup for Thursday’s episode of Impact.
Fred Yehi will challenge for Jonathan Gresham’s Pure title on a future edition of ROH TV. ROH hasn’t announced when the match will be airing.
Dak Draper vs. Eli Isom in the first round of this year’s Survival of the Fittest tournament will air on the ROH TV episode that premieres the weekend of Saturday, June 12.
Game Changer Wrestling’s Brett Lauderdale posted a tweet responding to the lawsuit that IndependentWrestling.TV filed against GCW: “My reply: I have sent countless proposals including one as recently as Mid-April, trying to find an amicable resolution including for #ToS666 weekend. I was promised a counter offer but it never came because Mike Burns was mad about Drew Cordiero’s Food Truck. Still waiting.”
On Busted Open Radio earlier this week, Billy Corgan discussed Nick Aldis potentially appearing on AEW programming: “I’ve pitched it to Tony [Khan] a few times [Nick Aldis coming over to AEW]. It’s Tony’s world, I respect him for what he’s building. But yeah, look, I’ll say it again, Nick [Aldis] versus Cody Rhodes for a third time. I mean, that is an epic, epic matchup waiting to happen. I saw it happen twice in front of my own eyes and when you combine Cody with the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship and that history, I’m sorry, I saw a look on Cody’s face that I’ve only seen when he was fighting for that title, because you can’t tell me that history does not mean something to him. I mean, his father’s nickname is tattooed across his chest for a reason and when your dad’s Dusty Rhodes, I mean, I’m sorry. I get goosebumps just talking about the dang thing, so I hope we see Cody and Nick down the road at some point because that to me, it’s just like, it’s just waiting. It’s just waiting.”
The NWA uploaded a video hyping up Aldis’ title defense against Trevor Murdoch at tomorrow’s When Our Shadows Fall PPV.
AEW has released a new Nyla Rose T-shirt with 100 percent of royalties going to Casa Ruby, which “provides countless immeasurable services to trans and #LGBTQ youth and individuals in the DC metropolitan area.”
