Engagement Ring Falls Into Times Square Grate; Twitter Rallies

MIDTOWN, NY — An engagement ring dropped into a Times Square utility grate during a tourist’s botched proposal has been found, but not before its owners returned to their home country.

The couple, later identified as John and Daniella, of the United Kingdom, reportedly flagged down police officers Friday night after the man dropped the ring and watched it tumble through the grate. Surveillance video tweeted out by the NYPD showed the desperate couple frantically trying to recover the ring, to no avail. At one point, the man even lies flat on his stomach to try to fish out the ring as his girlfriend kneels next to him.

But even after flagging down a police officer, they couldn’t get the ring back, which had reportedly fallen 8 feet.

Officers with the special operations team returned to the scene the following day and recovered the ring. The only problem — the couple had left without filing a report. So the NYPD enlisted the Twitterverse for help.

“She said Yes – but he was so excited that he dropped the ring in a grate. Our @NYPDSpecialops officers rescued it & would like to return it to the happy couple. Help us find them? call 800-577-TIPS @NYPDTIPS @NYPDMTN,” the NYPD tweeted.

On Sunday afternoon, after tweeting out more photos of the “almost engaged” couple, they finally found them. John and Daniella had returned to their home country, but the 21,000 retweets had worked.

“We’re making arrangements to get them their ring back,” the NYPD tweeted. “Congratulations!”

The man called into the CrimeStoppers hotline, The New York Times reported, and and said “Hey, it’s me.”
