PHOENIX,AZ — It’s hot inside a Phoenix Family Dollar Store, and it has nothing to do with sizzling deals. The store has been without air conditioning for about three weeks as the temperature outside hovers around 110 degrees. It’s been so oppressively hot some employees and customers have passed out or vomited, which are among the symptoms of heatstroke.
It could take another two weeks before the air conditioning system inside the store near 67th Avenue and Van Buren Street is fixed, according to a report Wednesday in the Arizona Republic. A cool-down isn’t expected anytime soon, according to the National Weather Service forecast.
Customers who complain about the miserable conditions are told to take their grievances to the Family Dollar Store corporate office, but “so far nothing’s been done,” store employee Amber Thundercloud told the Republic.

The sweltering temperatures inside the store aren’t the only source of complaint. A stench comes from the store’s freezer, which went on the fritz and was off long enough the contents inside thawed. It was quickly repaired, but the items inside were refrozen and remained on display Monday, when reporter Robert Anglen, who investigates consumer issues for the Republic, visited the store.
Fans were placed at the front and back door for air circulation, but they also circulated the stench, he wrote.
Publicly traded Fortune 500 company Dollar Tree, which owns the Family Dollar Store chain, said in a statement to Anglen that it is “aware of the situation and are in the process of resolving the issues as soon as possible.”
