Rebel Wilson Was Called Out After Claiming She’s the First Plus-Size Lead Actress in a Rom Com

The lack plus-size representation in Hollywood is ever so slowly (like, very slowly) changing, and there’s no question that actresses like Rebel Wilson are leading the charge. But to say that she started the charge? Well, that’s a point of contention that has landed the Aussie actress in some hot water.

“I’m proud to be the first-ever plus-sized girl to be the star of a romantic comedy,” the 38-year-old said during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres show while promoting her forthcoming film, Isn’t It Romantic.

Her words drew cheers from Ellen’s crowd, but some viewers took to Twitter to dispute Wilson’s claims, saying she should give credit to actresses like Mo’Nique and Queen Latifah for being the true trailblazers. In an exchange almost too polite, Wilson and a Twitter user with the handle @Halfapintdoll hashed out whether or not Wilson’s assertion was accurate.

“I love @RebelWilson as much as the next girl, but she isn’t the first plus sized woman to play the lead in a romantic comedy,” @Halfapintdoll wrote. “Queen Latifah and Mo’Nique have both played romcom leads.”

While paying her respects to the Twitter user, Wilson insisted that technically, those actresses didn’t fit all of her own chosen qualifications. “Hey girl!” wrote Wilson, “Yeah I of course know of these movies but it was questionable as to whether: 1. Technically those actresses were plus size when filming those movies or 2. Technically those films are catorgorized/billed as a studio rom-com with a sole lead.”

“So there’s a slight grey area,” she concluded. She followed with another tweet insisting, “I fully take all the comments onboard though so thank you,” with a heart emoji.

Writer Clarkisha Kent, however, believes there’s nothing gray about it, finding particular fault in Wilson’s second point. “There’s a girl who falls in love w/ a boy and the shit is funny in between,” she writes of Latifah’s and Mo’Nique’s films. “Tf is gray about that?”

Latifah’s films such as Last Holiday and Just Wright came out in 2006 and 2010 respectively, meaning she beat Wilson to the punch by about 12 years.

Isn’t It Romantic stars Wilson as Natalie, an NYC-based architect and major cynic who — after a bump on the head renders her unconscious — wakes up to find that she is living in a romantic comedy (one that includes Liam Hemsworth, who, according to the trailer, has a suitable amount of shirtless scenes).

Many on Twitter are calling for Wilson to take back her comment, but for now it looks like she’s standing by her technicalities.
