Residents Of Fishing Village Walk 4km To Reach Polling Booth As There Was None In Their Area
Residents of New Podampeta — a fishing village under Chhatrapur assembly constituency in Ganjam district, located 150km from the state capital — walked four kilometres to cast their vote at Podagada polling booth under Ramgarh gram panchayat in Ganjam district.
They said their village, which has more than 300 people, lacked a polling booth. According to the norms of the Election Commission (EC), polling stations should be designated in such a way that no person is required to travel more than two kilometres to vote.

The Podagada booth has more than 1,400 voters. Besides New Podampeta, the residents of nearby Jhatipadar and N Barapali villages also voted there. Even at 6 in the evening, the queue outside the booth was long.
