Stoughton Artist Paints On Toilet Paper To Fight Coronavirus

STOUGHTON, MA — What started as a tongue-in-cheek social commentary on people’s behavior surrounding the coronavirus is now raising money to help doctors battle the disease around the world.

Steven Leahy, former president of the Stoughton Art Association, painted one of his latest works on toilet paper and is raffling it off to benefit Doctors Without Borders.

Leahy, a Stoughton High School alumnus, painted the work during a Facebook Live on March 16 and called it “Survival.”

The painting features a picture of a Corona beer bottle on toilet paper, two things that have nothing to do with COVID-19. Leahy said it began as satire on public behavior before the outbreak worsened in the United States.

“Things had just become unhinged, and people were hoarding toilet paper, and it kind of blew me away that people were thinking of themselves first,” Leahy told Patch. “With the current situation of the coronavirus pandemic, it has given us all the chance to reflect on what is really important. We are in a time where we should be focused on what our part is in all this and what steps we can take to protect our most vulnerable.”

After creating the work, Leahy said, he started thinking of how he could use it to do some good.

He launched to raffle off the piece, with all the proceeds benefiting Doctors Without Borders, an international organization of doctors, nurse and other health care professionals fighting the pandemic worldwide.

Raffle tickets are available for $10 each at Leahy’s website. The drawing for the winner is scheduled for April 21.

Since making the painting, the Boston studio Leahy works in was closed. Although he’s not working, he said he’s been doing okay, because most of his sales are made online.

“I’m fortunate it works out that way,” Leahy said.
