A group of 14 Gopher wrestlers competed unattached at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open in Ames, Iowa on Saturday, headlined by Ethan Lizak’s dominant performance at 125 pounds. Two other Gophers – Dalton Lunde (184) and Rylee Streifel (285) – placed at the event, both finishing in fourth.

Lizak marched through the field at 125 by posting two falls and three technical falls on his way to the championship. After beginning the day with a pair of tech falls, Lizak won his quarterfinal match with a pin in less than one minute. He followed that with his third tech fall in the semifinals, then another first-period pin in the championship match. In his three tech fall victories, Lizak outscored his opponents by a whopping 53-3 margin. The title is the second open tournament title of Lizak’s career. He won last season’s Cobber Open as well.

In his first action since a runner-up finish at the Daktronics Open two weeks ago, Rylee Streifel again looked strong at heavyweight. Despite a loss to Quean Smith (Iowa State) in the quarterfinals, Streifel placed by reeling off three straight victories in wrestlebacks before falling to JJ Everard (Northern Iowa). Streifel has now placed at both tournaments in which he’s competed at the collegiate level.

Dalton Lunde turned in one of the best performances of his career by placing fourth at 184. All three of his victories on the day were bonus point wins, including a fast start to the tournament with a second-period pin in his opening match. A first-period fall in wrestlebacks propelled Lunde into the third-place match.
