Wounded JBLM-Based Army Ranger Dies In Germany

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, WA – An Army Ranger who was serving with a regiment from Joint Base Lewis-McChord succumbed on Thursday to wounds he sustained in combat last weekend while fighting in Afghanistan. The Ranger, 26-year-old Sgt. Cameron Alexander Meddock of Spearman, Texas, died in Landstuhl, Germany, according to a statement released by the United States Special Operations Command (USSOC).

Meddock was in the Badghis Province serving with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment based out of JBLM when he was hit by small arms fire Jan. 12. Meddock had served in the U.S. military since he enlisted in November 2014.

At the time of his death, Meddock was on his second deployment in support of Operation Resolute Support, USSOC officials said.

“Sergeant Cameron Meddock is one of America’s precious Sons,” Col. Brandon Tegtmeier, commander, 75th Ranger Regiment, said in a statement. “The entire Nation should strive to emulate the Warrior, Patriot and Husband that Cameron was. The 75th Ranger Regiment will forever honor Sergeant Cameron Meddock and his family will forever be a member of our Ranger family.”

Meddock reportedly served as a “machine gunner, automatic rifleman, gun team leader and most recently as a fire team leader” for the 75th Ranger Regiment, USSOC officials said, noting further that Meddock’s training included the U.S. Army Ranger Course, Basic Airborne Course, Basic Leader Course, and Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Course.

A decorated veteran already, Meddock’s military recognitions reportedly include the Purple Heart, Joint-Service Commendation for Combat, Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and NATO Medal, as well as the Ranger Tab, Parachutists Badge, Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and the Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badge for a Rifle, USSOC officials said.

“Sergeant Cameron Meddock was a phenomenal Ranger, and his selfless service represents the very best of our great Nation,” Lt. Col. Rob McChrystal, commander, 2nd Ranger Battalion, said. “He will be missed dearly and the 2nd Ranger Battalion offers its sincerest condolences to his family.”

A GoFundMe campaign was created to assist Meddock’s wife and unborn child. In less than one day the campaign raised more than $1,600 of its $35,000 goal. Click here to make a donation.
