Zlatan Ibrahimovic wants to stay at PSG, but the club have not offered him an extension
According to today’s edition of L’Équipe, PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic wants to extend his contract with the club for another year, but Les Parisiens have yet to make him a concrete offer.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic had the following to say about his situation at the UNFP Awards at the weekend:
“You know, a relationship depends on two people, not just one… Paris is the best city that I have lived in. I have lived in Malmö, Amsterdam, Turin, Barcelona and Milan, but you cannot compare Paris to anything else. I love France, she will always be in my heart and I will never forget her, what I have done here, nobody can take it away from me.”
Despite claims that Zlatan is the man who is less inclined to continue the relationship with PSG as reported by various outlets in recent weeks, it appears that the situation is actually the other way around.
PSG want to be able to appease Edinson Cavani, who has stated privately that he will attempt to force an exit this summer if Zlatan Ibrahimovic remains.
Les Parisiens have yet to show their hand to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mino Raiola on the matter and last summer had counted on letting the Swede go when his contract expired in 2016.
But his exceptional performances over the course of the 2015/16 campaign have caused them to rethink their strategy with regards to this situation. This, paralleled with the fact that they are severely struggling to convince another worldwide superstar to join them in Zlatan’s place, having held protracted negotiations with both Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo without getting very far, may bring Nasser Al Khelaifi to offer the Swede an extension.
On the other hand, following his lacklustre showing in the Champions League Quarter Final second leg with Manchester City, the PSG board seems resigned to the fact that with Ibrahimovic at the head of their attack, they are unlikely to win the Champions League.
In a different sense, that last factor is one of Ibrahimovic’s principal motivations for staying. He sees another season at PSG as his final and perhaps last chance to complete his European trophy cabinet with the Champions League title that he has so lusted after.
Also, his family, especially his wife Helena Seger, do not want to leave Paris and have found themselves a stable life and home in the French capital.
Nobody on the PSG board would deny that Ibrahimovic has been central to the club’s rapid development into one of Europe’s most feared forces but they also believe that he no longer represents the future of the club.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic wants a decision to be made before EURO 2016, which begins June 10th. A decision is likely to be made a little after the Coupe de France final on the 21st of May.
At the moment, Ibrahimovic is understood to have two offers on the table. One astronomical financial offer from a club in China and another from a Premier League side, believed to be Manchester United.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has proved in his career that he answers to nobody, but what if he was not as in control of his future as was previously thought?
