Augustana’s Schorr, Florida Tech’s Murphy garner 2018 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II weekly honors
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Augustana’s Kaylea Schorr and Florida Tech’s Melanie Murphy were named the Louisville/Slugger NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the week, respectively. The duo earned the honor for their outstanding play for the week of March 26-April 1.
Schorr, a Mantorville, Minn. native, hit .526 (10-for-19) with a double home run, eight RBI and five runs scored. Two of her RBI were game winners, including one of the walk-off variety against then-No. 13 Minnesota State. She opened the week with a perfect 3-for-3 performance against Wayne State (Neb.) in which she drove in three, scored a run and swiped one base. She homered and added two more RBI in game two against the Wildcats.
Schorr’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the game-winning hit as the now-No. 16 Vikings held on for a 7-6 win in game one over Concordia-St. Paul. Against the defending national champs, the senior first baseman was 3-for-4 with two RBI, including a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh that propelled Augustana to a 5-4 game-one win and a doubleheader sweep.
Murphy twirled a pair of shutouts and surrendered just six hits over 14 innings to help Florida Tech take the series from Sunshine State Conference foe Rollins. The junior southpaw fanned 11, walked three and held the Tars to a .130 batting average.
In the series opener, Murphy, a native of Melbourne, Fla., tossed a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and three free passes in a 2-0 victory. In the rubber game of the series, the hometown product scattered four hits, struck out four and did not walk a batter in the 7-0 triumph.
