Curry (Jasper, Ala.) grabs the top spot on Week 1 of the 2016 USA Today Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.
LOUISVILLE, KY. – With the 2016 season now underway, there has been a lot of movement since the release of the USA Today Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 Pre-Season Poll on February 25.
From the pre-season poll to the week one release, 11 teams fell out of the rankings making way for 11 new teams, including three into the top 5.
Up from their No. 8 pre-season ranking, the Lady Jackets of Curry (Jasper, Ala.) are off to a 14-0 start to begin their 2016 campaign and now occupy the top spot on the USA Today Sports/NFCA High School Super 25. Corner (Warrior, Ala.) threatened the Lady Jackets’ perfect record on March 17 when they pushed Curry to 11 innings. However, in the 11th, Taylor Rowe delivered a three-run double to give Curry the 3-0 victory.
After losses to Flower Mound (Texas) and Deer Park (Texas), the pre-season No. 1, Pearland (Texas) fell out of the Super 25. While both losses were later avenged, pre-season No. 2, Mission Viejo (Calif.) fell to Los Alamitos (Calif.) and Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) and dropped to No. 12 in this week’s poll.
No. 3, Crown Point (Ind.), No. 13, Bishop Carroll (Wichita, Kan.), No. 15, Parkland (Allentown, Pa.), and No. 17, Keystone (La Grange, Ohio) begin competition later this month. No. 24 Mount St. Dominic Academy (Caldwell, N.J.) opens on April 1.
The USA Today Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 will be released every Thursday through June 9.
State rankings submitted by NFCA member coaches are used to help compile the USA Today Sports/NFCA High School Super 25. Records for this week’s poll include all games played through March 21.
