Netflix Is Raising Its Prices, Again

Netflix Is Raising Its Prices, Again

Netflix is once again raising its subscription prices in the United States.

Reported by CNBC, Netflix’s basic SD plan is going up from $8 to $9 a month, its standard HD plan is going up from $11 to $13 a month, and its premium 4K plan is going up from $14 to $16 a month.

The basic plan lets users stream one show or movie on one device at a time in standard definition, the standard plan allows users to stream to two devices at the same time in high definition, and the premium plan allows users to stream to up to four devices at the same time in high definition and ultra high definition.

This price increase is reportedly the largest in history for the streaming service, ranging from a 13-18 percent increase, depending on the plan. The increase will become effective immediately for all new members, and will be phased in over the next few months for current members. This is reportedly the fourth time the streaming service has increased its prices since it launched in 2007.

Along with this price increase comes a six percent stock boost for the company, as its price increases have historically been good for the streaming giant’s investors. Some other countries, including those in Latin America and the Caribbean, will also receive higher rates. Some major international markets within those areas, including Mexico and Brazil, won’t be impacted by the change.

While regular price increases are standard, these could be coming specifically to offset the growing costs Netflix has taken on during its recent buying spree. It reportedly outspent every major Hollywood studio last year, even buying its own production studio.

The constant stream of new and acquired content is evident, with all of the new films and shows that came to the service in January 2019, like the upcoming FYRE documentary, the creepy Lifetime show You, various fantastic horror movies, and more which join the likes of Netflix originals like the highly successful Bird Box.

Executive-produced by Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni, this anime-inspired series debuted on Disney Channel in October 2018, and centers around Kazuda Xiono, a young pilot recruited by the Resistance and tasked with a top-secret mission to spy on the growing threat of the First Order. Set before the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the show also features BB-8, Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma, with Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie reprising their big screen roles.
With Ewan McGregor stating that he'd be totally onboard for another lightsaber stab at Obi-Wan Kenobi, it was reported in summer of 2017 that an Obi-Wan standalone was, indeed, in development. An unconfirmed report said that Stephen Daldry (The Hours, The Reader) would direct the film with a production start in the spring of 2019, but McGregor eventually denied that any such project was in development. In the wake of Solo: A Star Wars Story's lukewarm reception, Lucasfilm reportedly pumped the breaks on some standalone films, and Obi-Wan might've be one of those. The film was rumored to be a direct prequel to A New Hope, set on Tatooine and following Obi-Wan when he is living in exile. Liam Neeson has even said that he'd return to the franchise as Qui-Gon Jin if needed.
Back when Lucasfilm was developing anthology ideas there were two hot potential films. It's rumored that this was the movie Fantastic Four's Josh Trank was hired to helm, but after he was booted from the project nothing was confirmed. More recently, Logan director James Mangold was reportedly developing the Boba Fett film. But given the lackluster reception Solo received and the announcement of the streaming series The Mandalorian, it should come as little surprise that the Boba Fett movie has been shelved.

And yet, Lucasfilm has said there are several unannounced films in development. What could they be? Past rumors have included Guillermo del Toro approaching Lucasfilm with an idea for a Jabba the Hut anthology film and… well, we don't know much more than that. And there's also been chatter about a Yoda standalone (both Samuel L. Though Netflix continues to be extremely successful, it will have to continue providing quality content to stay on top, as incoming streaming competition is growing by the day. The Disney+ streaming service is set to launch this year, bringing with it much of Disney’s considerable back catalogue and fresh new content, like the original Star Wars show The Mandalorian.
