Jacks drop a pair of non-conference duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – South Dakota State (3-5, 2-0 WWC) dropped a pair of non-conference duals to MAC opponents, Ohio and No. 5 Northern Iowa Saturday afternoon in Cedar Falls, Iowa. SDSU fell to Ohio, 32-6 and to the fifth-ranked Panthers, 29-12.

“It’s not the day we wanted,” head coach Chris Bono said. “We have to rebound and bounce back against another conference opponent in Utah Valley on Thursday.”

In the opening dual, Brance Simms (133) and No. 17 Cody Pack (157) were the lone Jackrabbits to pick up wins, as they won 7-0 and 4-0, respectively.

Simms defeated Kagan Squire, while Pack bested Spartak Chino.

UNI opened an 18-0 lead before Simms broke through with a win after Ben Schwery (184) and Trey Hable (197) each dropped decisions before the Bobcats recorded back-to-back pins of J.J. Everard (285) and Ben Gillette (125).

Ohio bounced back with a pair of decisions before Pack’s win.

The Bobcats won the final four matches – including a pair of major decisions – en route to the win.

Following UNI’s 25-15 win over Ohio, the Jacks took on the fifth-ranked Panthers.

In the matinee, UNI bested the Jacks, 29-12. Everard (285), Alex Kocer (149) and Pack (157) all recorded wins in the loss.

Following a pair of defeats, Everard defeated Blaize Cabell in the heavyweight bout, 6-5.

Following three-consecutive losses, Kocer (149) pinned Tyler Patten at 2:24. Kocer came out on the offensive and led 9-2 prior to the fall.

Pack answered Kocer’s pin with a win of his own, defeating Jarrett Jensen, 4-0.

UNI won the final two matches of the day solidify a 29-12 win.

SDSU will next be on the mat on Feb. 6 at Utah Valley. The Jacks will then travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Feb. 9 to take on Cal Poly and Stanford in another triangular.
