Schools Should Prep Fall E-Learning Plans 'Just In Case'

ACROSS ILLINOIS — Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker advised school administrators and teachers to prepare both for in-class instruction and e-learning this summer “just in case.” With schools closed through the end of the 2019-2020 school year to slow the spread of the new coronavirus, Pritzker touched on what school leaders should be doing in the coming months to prep for fall during his daily address Sunday.

“I would prepare for both,” Pritzker said after being asked if teachers should be focusing on e-learning or in-class instruction. Since it’s too early to say how controlled the virus would be come August, he said school officials should be working “very hard” to make sure e-learning is in place.

Pritzker gave that advice not only because students could be at home in some capacity next school year but also, he said, because the option is important to have in place “even in the absence of a pandemic.”

In the short time since schools have shut down, it’s been clear that “many, many schools are not ready for e-learning but should be,” Pritzker said.

On Sunday, Pritzker announced that 2,126 more people have tested positive for the virus in the past 24 hours and there have been 59 additional deaths. To date, 1,933 people have died due to coronavirus in the state and 43,903 have tested positive for the virus.

This is a developing story. Check back to Patch for more information.
