SmackDown Live Results (09/04): Tag Title Tournament Continues
Tonight’s episode of SmackDown Live opens up from The Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan as we see that Renee Young is already in the ring.
She introduces Daniel Bryan & Brie Bella. They make their way down to the ring for an interview as the crowd chants Daniel Bryan’s name. Tom Phillips welcomes us to tonight’s show. He is joined by Corey Graves & Byron Saxton.
Renee shows them a recap of the attack on them last week, and footage of The Miz & Maryse challenging them before SmackDown Live started in an empty arena, where they taunted Bryan and Bella to come out and punch them in the face to “save them the embarrassment of being beat down in front of millions of people again”, and of course when they don’t come out they say that they must be afraid of them.
Bryan says that that’s a perfect encapsulation of who The Miz and Maryse are as people, people who attacked him and his wife from behind and then showed up early to call them out even knowing that they weren’t there. Bryan then says that they call themselves the It Couple, but the reality is they’re nothing but a couple of cowards. Brie then says that cowards talk and they didn’t come here to talk, and they don’t have to wait until Hell in a Cell. Bryan then says that it’s SmackDown time, they’re live on USA, and now it’s time to fight. Renee informs them that unfortunately The Miz & Maryse have left, and before they can respond.
Andrade “Cien” Almas & Zelina Vega head out. Vega runs them down for crying in the ring about how unfair their lives are and renames their TV show to Total Bores. Vega thanks Renee for playing the footage from last week and Almas says that it reminds him of how much fun it was to walk all over the great Daniel Bryan and he’s ready to do it again. Zelina says that Andrade wants to finish what he started right now and they advance on the ring.
Bryan takes his shirt off and we go to a commercial break before any match can begin.
Back from the commercial break and we are just in time for the bell of the opening match.
Daniel Bryan vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas: We are told that Paige made this match official during the commercial break. The opening bell sounds and Bryan and Almas trade holds on the mat evenly in the opening moments. Bryan looks for the Yes Lock early on, but Almas reaches the ropes to break the hold. The fight spills outside where Almas turns things around. Back in the ring, Almas looks for a running knee strike in the corner, but Bryan dodges it and Almas falls out to ringside again. Bryan looks for a cross-body off the apron on Almas on the floor, but Almas blocks it with a dropkick. Back in the ring, Bryan turns things around and hits a series of kicks in the corner before a running dropkick to the face. Bryan looks for a back-superplex, but Almas elbows him away. Almas follows up with a moonsault for a two count. Bryan comes back with more Yes Kicks, but Almas ducks one and face-plants Bryan into the middle turnbuckle. Almas hits the running double knee strike and Bryan is hurt. Almas wants the hammerlock DDT, but Bryan escapes, and Bryan also escapes a spinning back elbow attempt. Bryan comes back with a running knee to the face for the three count. Winner: Daniel Bryan
After the match, Brie hits the ring to celebrate with Bryan as Vega checks on Almas. Brie turns and drops Vega, then hits her with a running knee to the face. Brie and Bryan lead a “yes!” chant until The Miz and Maryse appear on the big screen, taunting them. They have taken the night off to have date night, right here in Detroit at the finest Italian restaurant. The Miz says that they were at the arena looking for Bryan and Brie earlier but it looks like they will have to wait until Hell in a Cell to embarrass them again. They taunt Bryan and Brie some more before signing off. Bryan and Brie head to the back as Bryan’s music starts up.
Commentary hypes up the other tag team title tournament match to determine who will face The Bar for The #1 Contendership to The New Day’s SmacKDown Tag Team Titles as well as interviews with Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair to send us to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and we get some hype for Connor’s Cure.
Daniel Bryan & Brie Bella are shown exiting the arena with their bags. They say that they are going to get dinner now at the same restaurant as The Miz & Maryse.
Commentary recaps the recent events that have been taking place in The SmackDown Women’s Title scene and they introduce Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch for their interview via satellite. First up is Charlotte, who says that at SummerSlam she won the title and lost her best friend, and she thinks Becky did deserve to win but what was she supposed to do, lie down? No, and Lynch even said to be the best you gotta beat the best, and she won.
Charlotte then talks about growing up in a shadow and says that she looked at Becky as an equal, as a pioneer, and it was she that put herself in her shadow and all she had to do was ask if she wanted a title match. Lynch is skeptical and tells her off before asking if she looks like a charity case and says that she’s done playing, and from now on she’s taking.
Lynch then says that it was a full-time job being Charlotte’s friend, managing her insecurities and telling her that she was good enough for her last name, but she’s not. Lynch then says that she doesn’t care how many times she has to drop Charlotte where she stands, she’s taking the title home. Flair mock claps and says that she’s glad she’s so fired up because at Hell in a Cell she’s not gonna look at her best friend who was never second best, but in the ring, she is second best, and she can’t handle it. Lynch tells her to shine the title up real nice because she’s never gonna see it again. Commentary informs us that Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch in a SmackDown Women’s Title Match has been officially booked for Hell in a Cell.
Jeff Hardy vs. Randy Orton at Hell in a Cell in a Hell in a Cell Match has also been officially booked, and coming up later tonight will be a video package looking at Jeff Hardy’s career.
Naomi makes her entrance, and she’ll wrestle Peyton Royce after the commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and The IIconics make their entrance and cut their usual promo.
Billie Kay says that it’s like Naomi’s favorite thing in the world to do and that is to get beat up by her, and Royce counters saying that it’s clearly her, and they go back and forth and somehow it turns out to be a joke on Naomi’s name. The IIconics then say that the women on SmackDown will soon understand that they’re the future.
Naomi vs. Peyton Royce: The opening bell sounds and Peyton wastes some time, so Naomi goes right after her with an elbow to the face. They trade strikes now and Billie Kay hits a cheap shot from ringside behind the referee’s back. Peyton talks some trash and goes for a kick, but Naomi ducks and connects with a kick of her own. Naomi takes out Billie at ringside and then kicks down Peyton. Naomi springboards over the top rope from the apron into the ring with a sunset flip on Peyton for the three count. Winner: Naomi
After the match, The IIconics immediately attack Naomi and double team her. The music interrupts and out comes Asuka to a pop. Asuka rushes the ring and dropkicks Peyton. She also takes out Billie. Peyton grabs Asuka but gets dropped. Asuka clears the ring and stands tall for a pop. Asuka goes to the floor and checks on Naomi, helping her to her feet as The IIconics look on from the ramp.
We go to a video package looking at the feud between Randy Orton and Jeff Hardy, including footage of some of Jeff’s biggest dives and spots. Jeff says that he has taken more risks and defied more limits than anyone in WWE, and he has always done it to defend his honor. Jeff also says that he has never had a reason to do it inside The Hell in a Cell Structure, until now, and for the first time ever at The PPV, he will soar higher than the heavens.
We go backstage with Paige when The Miz and Maryse roll up to complain about cutting their dinner short, both because Detroit’s food is so subpar, but also this is a Gift of the Magi situation because they came here to confront Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella, who of course left the building already. Paige books The Miz in an open challenge and The A-Lister complains and tells her to be a good general manager instead. She agrees and tells them they’re free to go, but if they do, they shouldn’t ever come back, and we go to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and R-Truth is walking along and yells at Maryse, thinking that she’s Carmella.
The Miz rolls up to ask what he’s doing and tells Truth never to speak to his wife again and asks when the last time they teamed together was. Truth says that it was seven years ago, and The A-Lister says that that was the last time he was relevant, and he’s a joke now. Truth says that he doesn’t know what Carmella sees in him and he walks off.
In the arena, Samoa Joe makes his entrance. He gets in the ring and on the mic and calls AJ Styles’ wife Wendy out. Joe says that he’s walked the building back and forth and up and down and couldn’t find The WWE Champion, so they must be taking his threats seriously. Joe then said that last week he said that he just might stop by the house and pay a visit, and in fact he knows that somewhere in the back woods of Georgia they’re huddled in the living room, Wendy cradling Annie in her arms, trembling.
Joe then says that but he needs her to look at AJ, standing there, staring at the door, curtains drawn with a baseball bat, wondering when he’s gonna bust through the door, but that’s not gonna happen because he’s not a monster. He’s not the man she thinks he is, and he only said what he said last week to keep his promise to her, and he needs her to see what he’s done for her, delivered her absentee husband on a Tuesday night, and forced him to actually care about them to boot.
His actions have forced Styles to come home and look after his family, and he wants them to enjoy tonight, to enjoy daddy tucking them in and making them feel safe, because there’s gonna be a lot more nights like that from now on, because at Hell in a Cell a very, very bad man is gonna take his championship and make him go night-night.
AJ appears on the tron and says that it’s alright to threaten another man, but threaten his family and that’s where the talking stops.
AJ Styles’s music hits. He charges down the ramp and it’s on. Joe gets a knee in, rapid-fire jabs, shoving him in the corner but AJ ducks a haymaker and fires forearms back. Big overhand right and Samoa Joe rolls to the floor where he drags Styles out and throws him into the steel steps. Joe gets a chair from the commentary area but AJ recovers and comes off the steps with the Phenomenal Forearm.
He picks the chair up and stalks after Samoa Joe, but Joe ducks and the chair hits the post full-force. Referees come to ringside to separate them, but Styles slips away and wipes Samoa out with a springboard plancha. Paige comes down to talk sense into AJ and manages to keep them separated. Paige and referees back AJ up the ramp as his music hits.
R-Truth is shown backstage, still looking for Carmella with an assist from Tye Dillinger when the Perfect Ten spots her and Truth rolls up on her to ask her if she’s seen herself, she tells him to leave her alone but Truth asks her for a truce to be in his corner against The Miz and the other Carmella. Carmella isn’t buying it until he tells her Maryse called her “Staten Island trash” and she gets hot and says that she wants to rip her hair out and feed it to her. Truth then says that he’s offering Dillinger a lesson. Tye doesn’t know what he could possibly teach him, and Truth says that he’s teaching him how to get into the main event of SmackDown.
Commentary hypes up The Triple Threat Tag Team Match for later on tonight and we go to a commercial break.

Rusev Day (Rusev & Aiden English) vs. SAnitY (Eric Young & Killian Dain) vs. The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) (SmackDown Tag Team Championship #1 Contender’s Qualifying Match): As SAnitY makes their entrance, Aiden English interrupts from off-camera. Aiden comes out on the stage and sings, then introduces Rusev with Lana. The opening bell sounds and Rusev Day and The Usos start this off trading tags and battling back and forth. Killian Dain gets involved from ringside and then Eric Young comes in and works over Jey Uso. Young and Dain trade tags now and take turns beating on Jey Uso. Dain hits a fisherman’s suplex on Jey for a two count, then he applies a chin lock. Dain dropkicks Jey to the outside, then Eric Young tags and hits a flying elbow off the apron onto Jey on the ringside floor. Back in the ring, Jimmy Uso finally gets the tag and cleans house. Jimmy kicks Eric Young down and then hits the running hip attack in the corner. Rusev tags in now and he’s next to beat on Young. Rusev drops Young with a spinning heel kick, then looks for the Accolade. Alexander Wolf distracts Rusev from the apron, which leads to Eric Young hitting a neckbreaker on Rusev. Jey Uso gets a blind tag and comes flying off the top with a splash and covers, but Aiden English breaks up the ramp. Dain runs in and takes out English, then Jey runs in and drops Dain. Jey runs the ropes and hits a suicide dive on SAnitY at ringside, and Rusev gets the blind tag off Jey’s back. Rusev runs the ropes now but Jey hits him from the apron. English hits a DDT on Jey on the apron, and then Young rolls up Rusev from behind, but English breaks it up. The distraction from English leads to Rusev hitting a big boot to the face of Young for the three count. Winners: Rusev Day (Rusev & Aiden English)

Back from the commercial break and commentary runs down the teams for season two of Mixed Match Challenge.
The Miz & Maryse make their entrance and The Miz gets on the mic. He says that he can’t believe after eight years that he’s forced to remind everyone that he’s superior to Daniel Bryan, but here we are, and he rolls tape of the ending to Bryan vs. Almas from last week before high-fiving Maryse. The Miz then says that they’re sick of chasing Bryan and Brie all over this godforsaken city, and they’ll drop them faster than sports reference, and he calls them out one last time.
Maryse then says that they are not coming out because they’re afraid, and The Miz berates Bryan for tucking his tail and leaving like he did when he retired. So wherever he is, who’s the coward now? The Miz runs Bryan down for “forcing” Brie to damage her own brand down and it disgusts him, and at Hell in a Cell they’ll be responsible for what happens, but it will be Bryan and Bella’s own fault.
Carmella and R-Truth make their entrance singing his theme song together and we go to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and the main event is underway.
The Miz vs. R-Truth: Carmella and Maryse are both at ringside for this one. R-Truth starts off strong on this one and hits a leg drop for a two count. Truth pummels on Miz in the corner and then hits a spinning heel kick. The Miz comes back with a knee to the midsection, then he takes a moment to recover while Truth is down. The Miz stomps on truth and pins for a two count. The Miz follows up with a neckbreaker and backbreaker for another two count. Miz hits the “yes kicks” until Truth grabs his leg to stop them and rolls up Miz for a two count. Truth fires up with some clotheslines and a spinning forearm shot. Truth hits a splash in the corner and then he looks for the axe kick, but Miz dodges it. Miz hits a DDT for a two count. The Miz wastes some time imitating Daniel Bryan and then looks for the running knee strike, but Truth dodges it and hits a spinning heel kick. Truth looks for a back suplex, but Miz lands on his feet and takes out Truth’s knee. Miz looks for a Figure Four but Truth reverses into a pin. Miz immediately gets up and boots Truth in the face. As The Miz sets up for the Skull Crushing Finale, Daniel Bryan’s music hits for the distraction. This leads to R-Truth rolling up The Miz in a pin for the three count. Winner: R-Truth
