Tony Schiavone Reveals Whether Or Not Eric Bischoff Told Him What to Say When He Spoiled Mick Foley’s WWF Title Win
Former WCW announcer Tony Schiavone was the special guest on today’s episode of Busted Open Radio, and during the appearance Schiavone heard, for the first time, audio of him infamously spoiling Mick Foley’s first WWF Title win during a WCW Nitro broadcast.
“First time I’ve ever heard it,” Schiavone admitted after the audio played. “I mean, I know what I said obviously, but it’s the first time I ever heard it. Because I’m not big going back and watching my stuff, I’m not big on that at all.
“The story behind that is people think that Eric [Bischoff] told me to say that, which he did not. He sent Annette, which was one of our assistant producers out, and I remember Annette walking towards the set, and her eyes are like as big as saucers. And it was during the break and she said, ‘Cactus Jack, Mick Foley is gonna win the world title, and Eric wants you to really crap on it. We want you to say something bad about it.’”
Schiavone goes on to explain that he felt that wrestling fans would want to tune in to watch Foley win the world title, and that is precisely what happened, subsequently breaking WCW’s 84-week streak of beating Monday Night Raw in the weekly Monday Night War ratings.
