West Texas A&M’s Moore, UVa-Wise’s Brandts garner 2017 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II weekly national awards

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –  UVa-Wise’s Taylor Brandts and West Texas A&M’s Kylee Moore garneredLouisville Slugger / NFCA Division II National Pitcher and Player of the Week honors, respectively, for games played April 10-16.

Brandts was unhittable in two starts last week twirling a pair of no-hitters in Mountain East Conference play. The junior right-hander struck out 14 and walked two in 12 innings of work. In game one of a doubleheader against Shepherd, Brandts fanned eight and allowed two free passes in a 2-0 victory over the Rams. A day later, the King George, Va. native struck out six and was a hit batter away from a perfect game in a five-inning victory over Fairmont State. Brandts, the MEC Pitcher of the Week, extended her scoreless streak to 47 innings and has not allowed a run since March 29.

Moore had a monstrous weekend for the sixth-ranked Lady Buffs as they took over sole possession of second in the Lone Star Conference after a series win over Cameron. In three games, the sophomore from Van, Texas hit .778 (7-for-9), with nine runs and seven RBI. She walked three times, recorded a .833 on-base percentage and did not strike out in 13 plate appearances. Six of her seven hit went for extra bases, clubbing three doubles and three home runs, attributing to her 2.111 slugging percentage. The Lone Star Conference Player of the Week launched a pair of long balls, drove in four runs and scored four times in game one. Moore followed that with another homer, three doubles, three RBI and five runs scored in the Saturday doubleheader sweep.
